 Intro

Some of you might be considering going overseas for studying English or as an experience for your future career. According to research by an online recruiting agency, Incircuit Corporation, 20.3 percent of students in 856 universities have plans to study abroad this year. The research also shows that they plan to spend an average of over 15 million won for it. Everyone agrees that it costs a lot to study abroad. Going overseas seems to be a far away dream for those who do not want to depend on their parents economically. However, we can always fall back on ‘plan B’. It is a Working Holiday! Working Holiday allows students to work while experiencing life in foreign countries.

Body

Korea has reached agreements for Working Holiday visas with New Zealand, Canada and Japan since singing the first agreement with Australia. So far, it is estimated that over ten thousand people have been abroad through Working Holiday programs.

One of the attractions of this program is that you can prepare for going abroad by yourself, not through agencies. There are many Working Holiday communities on the Internet. You can find a lot of information through websites regarding how to get a visa, how much it costs, and other related issues. In addition, you can also get some help from those who have had experience going abroad. One of the biggest communities is ‘ream of a bluebird (http://cafe.daum.net/tommyhan)’ which is about Australia. This online community has over 8600 members. As for Working Holidays in New Zealand, N‘ew Zealand story(http://cafe.daum.net/newzealand)’is the most well-known website. It has over 4600 members.

It is possible to get a visa for New Zealand not only in Korea but also in New Zealand. So, it would be a good idea to get some advice from the community members about the two ways of obtaining a visa.

It is important to check how many people are permitted to get a working holiday visa per year and when they offer the opportunity. Though there is no limit for Australia, the other countries have limits.

While 4,000 people are invited to New Zealand per a year, Canada invites only 800 people a year. The Working Holiday Association(http://www.workingholiday.com) offers lots of information and help to those who want to have a working holiday. The association, established in 1996, has been helping about 1,600 Korean youngsters each year.

Se-ra Yoon, 24, went to Australia last year through the working holiday program. “ My Working Holiday in Australia has become one of the most precious experiences in my life.”:

She traveled around Australia and New Zealand with money earned from working. “ worked hard in order not to depend on my parents financially and to travel around. In the end, I made it and I am proud of myself!”At first, according to her, it was difficult for her to find a job provided by an Australian. “any people expect to work with native owners. So did I. However, it is hard to get such a job if your English is not good enough and if you do not have confidence” she said.

As she lived with Australians and practiced English very hard, she could finally work in an Italian restaurant owned by a Australian. “ tried and tried. I handed in my resume to over 20 shops.

If I had not tried, I would never have got the job.”She said that the most important things to succeed in Working Holiday are basic English skills and confidence. “he better your English is, the easier you get a job and friends. Then, your English improves more “

One of the difficulties you go through can be loneliness. “ It was my first time to be far away from my family and friends.

Even though I made some friends there, I felt lonely.”Mi-hyun Jo, 23, who was in New Zealand for 9 months recalls. “Nevertheless, I tried to overcome the loneliness by thinking positively that it was a golden chance to grow up. I think it is true."

Conclusion

Now you might think that Working Holiday is not a ‘lan B’ anymore because you can kill lots of birds with one stone. Are you still frustrated by the fact that you cannot go abroad because of money? If so, believe in yourself. You are much better than you think. Working Holiday will help you find how precious you are.
