About two years ago, many viewers thought that the key of a drama's success was the actor or actress. However, nowadays this is changing. Now, the key of a successful drama is the writer. Viewers choose dramas based on writer. ST has researched some of the well known Korean drama writers..........................................................................................................Ed.

There are many popular dramas in Korea. As there is a film director behind every movie, so there is a drama writer behind every a drama. There are many drama writers in Korea who have their own style. I will introduce some of the more well known Korean drama writers.

First, let me introduce one of the most famous drama writers, Kim Su-hyun. She made her debut in the 1968 MBC radio drama ‘A Deer in a Snowfield’. She has written many popular drama scripts and she has always been a famous drama writer. The one theme in her drama scripts is ‘family love’, on which she puts great emphasis. Family always makes us feel warm. Another theme which appears is ‘Realism’. While watching these dramas, people can relate to the actor because the situation in the drama mirror their own lives. Her dramas especially appeal to many housewives.

However, her dramas have many problems. The most serious problem is that the subject matter is provocative. For example, the theme of one of her recent dramas was adultery. It came as a shock to viewers when they saw a housewife taking away her friend’s husband in the drama. Another problem is a general patriarchal atmosphere in dramas which goes against the current trends. She describes a husband as being always powerful at home, and an idea mother as surrendering to her husband. Now, our society is becoming more and more open, but her dramas are always conservative. If she writes more open drama scripts, then she will be more favored by the public.

Second, another famous writer is ‘Noh Hee-kyung’. She made her drama debut in the MBC drama ‘Serry and Soo-ji’. Actually, her dramas are not that popular because of being so realistic. For example, cafe’s don’t appear frequently in her drama because she thinks that poor people cannot afford to go there very often. The characters in her dramas are always poor since she loves the poor. There are other problems in her dramas. The most serious problem is the complexity of her scripts, resulting in a low a low viewing rate. If she wants people to love her dramas, she needs to write scripts in a more simple way so that people can easily understand A good drama is loved by the majority, not by the minority. I hope her drama will become more widely accepted and loved by viewers.

The third drama writer is ‘Kim Gi-ho’. He is the first man to try a psychological drama. ‘What happened in Bali’ is a typical psychological drama which deals with the subtle mental states of the characters. The actors and actresses are very realistic, and the last scene is shocking. In this way, he always tries to write stories with new subject matters. His dramas are very realistic, but unrealistic at the same time. However, his dramas also have problems. It is frequently pointed out that the drama storyline development is very similar in all of his works. Viewers look forward to his drama, expecting what kind of new subject matter he is going to choose. What’s necessary to be a beloved drama is a truthfulness. I hope he will write some fabulous drama scripts soon.

The last person I will introduce is a competitive writer ‘Lim Sunghan’. Simply put, her dramas are sensational and shocking. That’s all. But her dramas are popular. Moreover, a heroine of her drama, Han Hye-sook, received a prize last year. The viewing rate was an average of over 40%. Why was this drama so popular? The answer is simple. It is because this drama is interesting. People were delighted by the sensational story, provocative words and astounding story development. Everything thing was sensational. A hero got revenge on his cheating father, a heroins real mother happened to become her mother-in-law, and a female shaman became the main character of the drama. The more criticism there is, the more sensational the drama gets. How can we solve the problems and crises that arise in these drama? The best way is not to watch the drama at all. However, as you guess, it is nearly impossible not to watch it.

There are many more drama writers in Korea. They continue to try to make more wonderful and touching dramas. Korean viewers who love dramas should constructively criticise these dramas. One of the most important things is a new story. A good story will make the viewers become attached to the characters in the drama. Fortunately, there are various genres of dramas coming out. We look forward to more quality dramas.
