Anew history begins to unfold whenever the Soongsilians get together. A Statistics and Actuarial Science graduate student team bagged the first prize in the’Assure Our Korea, University Students 'Insurance Industry Idea’ contest. The SSU team was told that their idea was really creative. The contest’s final screening and awarding ceremony took place last September 7 at Yoido Insurance Institution in Seoul.
The SSU team’s novel idea, fine logic, and good presentation skills spelled its success. It suggested birth promotion insurance and designed actual insurance clauses that guarantee a sterile cost for people who have given up their sterilization due to its high cost. They also suggested a way of providing an insurance premium discount for young pregnant women.
Professor Gwon Hyuk-sung (Statistics and Actuarial Science) said, “I’m so happy for our students. They got this prize through their brilliant idea, despite their very busy schedules owing to their qualifying exams and everything else that they had to accomplish.” He added, “It’s really meaningful because it’s the very first time that our graduate school students got a prize, and I’m grateful that they raised our program’s standing.”
Song Byung-chae, one of the team’s members, said, “Even if we have just graduated from college, we discussed every detail and held countless meetings, just like insurance designers competing in a contest. I guess that’s why we won.” He added, “I hope that the students in other majors will grab opportunities like this so they will gain a wonderful experience even before they graduate.”
