The Soongsilians are unfamiliar with some classes when they register for courses. Starting this semester, they may see “KCU cybercourse” behind a course’s name. Why can they now listen to several cyberlectures? SSU, the first university in South Korea, agreed to take over Korea Cyber-University (KCU), the first cyber-university in South Korea, in February this year. As such, SSU can improve the quality of the education it offers by adding online education contents. Can this have any positive effect on the Soongsiliansother than offering them the alternative of listening to cyberlectures? ST interviewed Lee Yang-ju (Chief, Strategic Planning Team) about the takeover process and the operating plan.

ST: Why did SSU take over KCU?

Lee: SSU became interested in the education import business and in founding a cyber-university via remote education when its computer institute was closed. We thus participated in KCU’s takeover process. It is worthwhile to invest in on/offline education infra construction, the adult education market, and education competitiveness reconsideration.

ST: What is the main purpose of the arguments regarding KCU?

Lee: First of all, building an on/offline educational infrastructure can be cited as the most important objective of the takeover. SSU wants to prepare for the future education market by building an infrastructure for it. Through this, SSU will try to improve its cooperation utilization as well as the quality of its global education by building something akin to Vietnam IT Center, which SSU and SKT are preparing to establish.

ST: What is the positive aspect of SSU’s takeover of KCU?

Lee: Due to the increasing importance of IT these days, SSU expects mutual synergy between online and offline education. SSU will have a variety of online lectures that will be enriching and exciting. Also, SSU anticipates securing market competitiveness for its future higher education, and preparing for the global education market through the joint development of a remote and next-generation education system. In addition, SSU continues to research on and plan a specific operating scheme that will draw many positive effects.

ST: What direct effects will this takeover have on the Soongsilians?

Lee: First of all, the Soongsilianscan perceive changes in the lectures. There will be a cross-registration system between SSU and KCU through cyberlectures. It can be expected that the students will be provided a variety of lectures. Besides, we hope to be able to address the scarcity of the offline space, and to reduce the expenses for online lectures. KCU will undoubtedly be able to offer better-quality lectures. In the case of the foreign students, they can have access to more lectures and will have less difficulty following the Korean classes because they can review the classes through the corresponding online lectures. Moreover, SSU has decided that the assistants who will operate the online lectures with KCU will be Soongsilians. Thus, the takeover will benefit the Soongsilians both economically and academically.

ST: How about the operating plan for the cyber-university?

Lee: Even the school name has yet to be decided between Soongsil Cyber-University and KCU. In the meantime, Soongsil Foundation and Soongsil Bongam Educational Foundation will operate them as two independent entities, but it is expected that they will be integrated in the future. The chairman and president of each school are considering the adjunct, and through the management partition, SSU will be able to help stabilize KCU. It will share the values of SSU as well as its educational goals. The two schools will also try to communicate with each other constantly, and to produce synergistic effects.

ST: What are the operating systems of KCU?

Lee: To start with, KCU is expected to operate in a way different from how the pre-existing Hospitality Institute is operating. First, in the case of the current campus, the KCU buildings are scheduled to be moved to the SSU campus. Moreover, by utilizing the spaces in SSU for special Saturday offline lectures and meetings, KCU will be able to secure stable spaces in the offline campus. In addition, SSU will be able to further increase the expertise and quality of its online lectures by using KCU’s content-making studios and production facilities. SSU will also be able to establish a connection with distance education, and will be able to join many other educational projects, such as Vietnam IT Education Center.

ST: Finally, do you have any announcement?

Lee: As for KCU, there is no concrete or systematic framework yet because it is still in its early stage. SSU is still studying how best it can draw positive effects on the university and students,so please pay much attention to the future SSU.

Recently, the online education market has progressed much both qualitatively and quantitatively throughout many different fields, including university entrance exams and various other exams. Online education has limitations, however, such as the absence of face-to-face meetings. This may partly explain why the students do not prefer the KCU courses. SSU should thus come up with a strategy for reconciling its offlineand online universities. In short, the argument regarding KCU should be in the direction of how to substantially improve the quality of education being offered by SSU instead of the formal replacement of the school name.
