1. What is SIFE?
SIFE(Students in Free Enterprise) is an international non-profit organization. SIFE helps university students change the community positively and become leaders who have a keen sense of responsibility. SIFE does this by cooperating with enterprises and universities. The mission of SIFE is “to bring together today’s and tomorrow’s top leaders to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business.”Thirty universities nationwide and over 39 countries worldwide are participating in SIFE. Among the university participants is SSU SIFE.
SIFERs (the people working with SIFE) do many things. They organize teams in their respective universities, formulate project proposals, and execute projects. In the process of doing these, they apply the concept of business and strive to improve the quality of life of communities.
SIFE holds two annual events: NC(National Competition) and WC(World Competition). In NC, each team presents the results of their one-year project.Enterprises evaluate these and select the winning team, which will participate in WC as the national representative. WC is the festival of the SIFERs around the world. Each national representative shares the country’s projects with the others, and these are judged by global businessmen. Not only the national representative but also all the SIFERs can attend the WC. This year, WC will be held in Washington D.C., USA to celebrate the designation of “Day of SIFE” by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
2. SSU SIFE
SSU SIFE is carrying out a variety of projects under the mission “An active leader who has a passionate business mind and a keen sense of social responsibility.” One of these projects is the JIPRO project. JIPRO is a non-profit organization that sells straw craft made by elders. The objective of the JIPRO project is to help JIPRO become independent in various fields, such as in distribution and promotion. Another of its projects is the Modish project. It aims to correct the bad eating habits of students who live away from home, and to help increase the revenue of small grocery stores. Vitalizing traditional markets and rediscovering the traditional market’s value are the goals of the Gaon project.
Kim Jin-kyeong(’11, Electrical Engineering), an SSU SIFE SIFER, said,“It is so fascinating that people all over the world are united under SIFE’s values.” She added, “SIFE offers me a chance to look after my own life and attitudes as well as after the quality of life of other people.”
