Along with EBS and Songpa-gu Office, SSU started its “Reading Taxi” campaign, last October 20. SSU, EBS, and other participating institutions are planning to eventually expand the campaign and to simultaneously launch the “Reading Subway” and “Reading Bus” campaigns, making them a series of nationwide campaigns. What’s “Reading Taxi”? It is a taxi whose passengers can listen to a radio broadcast regarding the contents of a book, like an audio book, during their ride. While running, taxis with the “Reading Book” sticker will always be tuned in to 104.5 MHz, which is EBS FM. While tuned in to this radio station, you can listen to “Reading Radio,” a program that reads books to you. Through this station, taxi drivers can listen to audio books and can start conversations about these with their passengers. Moreover, by scanning a QR code with their smartphones, taxi passengers can continue listening to audio books even though they have already alighted from the taxi.
SSU, which promotes reading, also offers humanities lectures every month for taxi drivers. So far, there have been two humanities lectures in the auditorium of Sam-Gwang Taxi Company, and in each of these, 70-100 taxi drivers participated and showed enthusiastic responses. Various other lectures will be offered every month.
President Kim Dae-keun said, “The U.S. has yellow cabs and Japan has MK taxis. In South Korea, there are now “reading taxis.” With the world’s first reading taxi, I expect more and more people to enjoy reading daily.”
