Paul Krugman: “Democratization of the Economy: Is It Possible? How?”

▲ Paul Krugman says that he can’t understand the South Korean economy but hopes to provide some helpful suggestions from current difficult economic situations of America.
Last October 10 marked the 115th anniversary of the foundation of SSU. An academic lecture was held at 3 o’clock in Hankyungchik Memorial Hall. The subject of the lecture was “Democratization of the Economy: Is It Possible? How?” A constant stream of visitors arrived during the lecture, more than the number of people that were expected to attend the lecture.

The guest lecturer, Paul Robin Krugman, is an American economist, a professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, and an op-ed (abbreviated from “opposite the editorial page”) columnist for New York Times. In 2008, Krugman won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions, New Trade Theory and New Economic Geography. According to the Nobel Prize Committee, the prize was given to Krugman for his outstanding work, which comprehensively explained the patterns of international trade and the geographic concentration of wealth, by examining the effects of economies of scale and of consumer preferences for diverse goods and services.

In the lecture, Krugman said, “Political force greatly affects the market economy. The government’s friendliness to companies aggravated the social polarization because money is very much involved in politics. The solution to this is a change in politics rather than in the market. There are measures that can be taken to address the problem, such as imposing more or bigger taxes on companies and adopting a welfare policy. Having consistently struggled to protect human liberty, I think that the democratization of the economy can be realized in that manner.”

The lecture was special for a number of reasons. One is that it was successfully held in SSU. As a student studying Economics said, “I feel honored to meet the writer of our textbook in the flesh!” The lecture also offered the students a valuable opportunity to meet public figures that work to better the situation of the college students and ordinary citizens. The other and more important reason is that the lecture was a joint effort by the students and the school. A graduate asked SSU to open a class where eminent scholars will be invited to speak. Its purpose is to make the juniors proud of SSU and dream big. SSU tried to execute the plan and was fortunately able to pull it off.

Despite some technical drawbacks, the lectures went well. The Soongsil Presidential Lecture has by no means reached its end; there will be more lectures in the future. Striving to learn lessons from the encountered technical problems will make it possible to predict qualitative improvement in the future lectures.

A seminar sponsored by the International Student Office was held on September 17 at the Data Processing Hall, where An Yuxiang (Councilor of Education) spoke for SSU’s many Chinese students concerning studying successfully in South Korea.

This lecture was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and South Korea. The total number of Chinese students in SSU is 454, accounting for 95.17% of the university’s gross international students. TheInternational Student Office organized this event to lift the spirits of SSU’s Chinese students. The lecture was well received by them.

The subject of the seminar was 同舟共濟, a Chinese saying that means“ to work together and to wriggle out of a difficulty.”An Yuxiang encouraged the students to play the role of a bridge between South Korea and China, which have been political, cultural, and economic partners for a long time. An mentioned interesting anecdotes that happened to him while he was working in South Korea, and asked the audience to keep the following in mind:

* Strive to adapt to the international society, and develop individual competitiveness.
* Be proud that you are studying in South Korea.
-South Korea has gained a competitive advantage over UK and USA in the IT field.
-The number of South Korean companies that have advanced into the Chinese market is increasing, and the two countries have become closer to each other.
-You can experience the East Asian cultural sphere in South Korea.
* Develop your abilities so you would have a good command of the Korean and English languages.
* Take good care of your physical health.

The lecture was well received. After the lecture, some students asked questions and took group photos.

▲ An Yuxiang, based on the experience he had so far gained from studying in South Korea, emphasized the merits of studying in South Korea.
