Communicate Your Ideas and Put Them into Practice

Topic : The story is more important than the specs?

▲ Interviewee An Sungmin [Electrical Engineering, 06]
An Sung-min : Most students prepare well for the SAT so they could enter the university. At this point, they do all that they could to get good grades so they could enter a reputable university. Then, at the appointed time, they select a course in an unpopular department or aim at becoming wait-listed at the very least. In any case, students should be basically qualified. How to do that is the next problem. In other words, "specs" take priority over "story." I'm not saying that you must study abroad and obtain certificates that have no relation with your major. For me, I try to acquire the basic specs that everyone else has. Then I focus on acquiring a skill that others don't have. For example, I'm always struggling to improve my presentation skills as much as my knowledge and skills in relation to my major, because I want to be a researcher. I have heard many times that the ability to express one's thoughts well is very important for an engineer. As such, in my job interview, the presentation skills that I will have acquired will have a great impact on my interviewer.

Choi Hae-won : Today, many students don't know what they want to do. I think that such students will not be able to make a difference because they don't even know their basic wants, and their dream. I therefore think that it's good to engage in various activities while in school. If you engage in various activities, you will be able to find your dream. Some people say that surplus specs are not good. I don't agree with them because I believe these are the evidences of your efforts to find your dream, and I think that you can come up with a career plan after setting your goal. For example, I didn't have a dream when I entered the university, so I concentrated on coming up with various specs to be able to get a job. I engaged in many activities, such as study for credit, English classes, volunteer work, and a mentoring program. I discovered what I wanted to do through these activities, and I was able to write my own story after finding my dream.

▲ Interviewee Kim Pil-ji [Organic Materials and Fiber Engineering, 06]
Kim Pil-ji : Today, there are many people who have various and high specs, such as good credits, good English grades, volunteer work, and overseas study. To get a job, though, it is more important to have a good background in the field that you're interested in. Many companies prefer to hire the right person for a position rather than a perfect person from a diverse field, and many right persons have their own stories. Thus, I believe that you have to get a "story" rather than "specs," and this may imply engaging in various activities related to your dream rather than in those that are not related to your dream. For example, when I was in the lower grades, I religiously attended the English classes in the university, which eventually helped me get good grades in TOEIC; it occurred to me then that having English skills would be a basic requirement wherever I'd go. Later, when I was in the upper grades, I also engaged in various activities, such as internship. Of course, that was related to my dream. It was not directly connected to getting a job, but it was a great help for me both to get a job and to change jobs. Also, it helped me become a member of a top company in my field of interest because it had a decisive effect on me, which I'm still benefiting from until now.

You have heard many ideas and anecdotes from seniors about the topic "the story is more important than the specs?" Today's youth unemployment problem is very serious, so nobody is confident that this is the solution for getting a job. If there is a solution, maybe it is doing what you think is best. It is for this reason that ST does these interviews. Now, communicate your own ideas about how you can fulfill your dream, and put your ideas into practice!
