When you walk on-campus or when you’re in class, you can see foreigners from diverse cultures. They are the exchange students who came to SSU. ST interviewed four foreign exchange students.

ST : What made you come to South Korea as an exchange student?

Derrick : South Korea is a technologically advanced country, and as my major in Uganda is IT, I chose to go to South Korea due to its developed IT, which is important for my future career. Besides, I obtained a GKS (Global Korea Scholarship), which gave me a great opportunity to come to South Korea.

Kevin : South Korea is known for its trendsetting pop culture, and I find the South Korean people very interesting. Even the lifestyle of the South Koreans is incredibly unique and healthy. Also, the economic status of South Korea is quite advanced, and I would love to learn how things are done in this country.

Gauhar : K-culture really attracted me to come to South Korea. I enjoy watching South Korean drama, so I developed an interest in South Korea. I’ve also heard many people say that South Korea has a good education system.

Vel sankar : South Korea’s advanced technology brought me to SSU. I really want to be an exchange student in SSU, which is among the top 20 universities in the world, and being an exchange student in South Korea isn’t disappointing at all.

ST : What was the most difficult thing that you had to contend with in South Korea, as an exchange student?

Vel sankar : I had a hard time with the Korean food. Korean food is quite different from the Indian food, so it took time for me to get used to it.

Kevin : Perhaps adjusting to the weather. The Philippines has only wet and dry seasons, so I’m not well acquainted with winter, spring, and fall.

Derrick : The cold weather of South Korea affected me a lot, too. It’s my first time to be in a country with a -3°C temperature. Another difficulty that I had was that it was not easy for me to buy some things that I needed due to my language problem. I also had no knowledge of the South Koreans at all, but now, I can buy tuna gimbap without any problem.

ST : Is there any place in South Korea that you want to visit?

Gauhar : I want to visit Jeju and Busan with my friends. I hope I can visit those places this summer.

Derrick : I think most exchange students want to go to Jeju Island. I want to go there, too. It’s not too far to visit. I really want to go to Jeju.

Vel sankar : In my case, I want to visit Busan and Daegu. I’ve heard that Daegu is a pretty unique place.

ST : Please tell me about your most special experience in South Korea.

Vel sankar : I visited Seoul Motor Show 2013, which was held in Ilsan. It fascinated me a lot. It was really amazing. I can’t ever forget that day that I visited the motor show.

Gauhar : Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace is the one. I almost cried for joy because I was in the place that I had seen until then only in the Korean drama.

ST : Can you tell me your plan after completing the exchange student program?

Vel sankar : If I can, I want to pursue a Master’s degree in South Korea. I really like the lab of SSU. Also, the South Koreans are nice so I want to stay here for as long as I can.

Gauhar : I hope to stay here for one more semester, if I can get the chance to do so. I really like the South Korean people. They are really kind, and they always try to help us. I also want to pursue an internship program in a company, and an MBA in a foreign country.

Kevin : I plan to come back to South Korea. If I am fortunate enough, I also want to work here.

Derrick : I dream of pursuing a Master’s course, and the country where I want to pursue it is the one and only Republic of Korea. I will pray harder for this to happen so that I can stay for a longer time in South Korea, for more than a year.

It is certain that being an exchange student can make one’s university life flourish. The five students who were interviewed by ST are actually satisfied with their decisions to be exchange students. They are really happy to be where they are. Make your days in the university more unique. If you will be given a chance to be an exchange student, don’t be afraid to grab the chance. Through the exchange student program, you can broaden your view of the world.
