Last September 13, the 11th Korea-Japan Exchange Symposium was held in
Han Kyung-chik Memorial Hall, SSU, with the theme “Senior Citizens’
Welfare and the Role of the Local Government.” The symposium was hosted
by Soongsil Foundation for Symbiotic Welfare, UNIVERS Foundation, and
Korea-Japan Exchange Program Organizing Committee, and was co-conducted

symposium has so worthy and meaningful a topic. I hope the world will
be with us.” The symposium consisted of lectures and discussions about
the solutions for the aging problem and the role of the local government
in addressing it, which are common interests of South Korea and Japan.
The participants expressed several opinions and emphasized the importance
of the autonomy of the local government, the duty of the society to
help the poor, the establishment of a management system of professional
social workers, the professionalism of the social workers, the standard-
ization of the welfare service, and the conduct of more researches for
the senior citizens.
