One such remarkable case is the trekking of the Himalaya. The trekking guides and porters are natives to the area. Moreover, their job description includes following the travelers assigned to them. The porters carry their heavy luggage weighing approximately 40kg, 50kg, or even more in order to provide the travelers a more comfortable trekking experience. However, the porters and trekking guides' daily wage is around 3~4 dollars only. Furthermore, they are not provided with a comfortable lodging, washroom, and food in the mountain cabin. Fatigue and mountain sickness have become part of their everyday lives.
Due to this historical inequality in tourism, the ‘Fair Trade Movement becomes the way out to solve this problem. The aim of Fair Tour is to make tourism more sustainable by ensuring that the people who contribute their land, resources, labor and knowledge to tourism are the ones who reap the benefits.
This is done by growing awareness about responsible tourism to travelers; assisting tourism businesses to operate more sustainably. This includes fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing and operations, equitable distribution of benefits and respect for human rights, culture and the environment.
