“One simple, elegant equation that explains everything in the universe.” That’s what Stephen Hawking is after in the

movie, The Theory of Everything . Stephen Hawking is a British physicist who has developed a great achievement, in spite of his illness: Lou Gehrig’s disease. Hawking is known for his battle with his disease, and the groundbreaking work in physics and cosmology. According to the cast and crew, however, his untold stories are perhaps the ones most worthy of portrayal.

The Theory of Everything vividly reenacts the dramatic life of Stephen Hawking. Stephen, played by Eddie

Redmayne, possesses a great interest in physics, especially the universe and the black hole. Even when he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, he still continues his research. By then he marries Jane, played by Felicity Jones, who seemed capable enough to embrace his illness; everything seemed all right, and he lives on with such happy a life.

However, happiness could not last forever. As the disease made further progress, Stephen becomes incapable of doing anything on his own. He could not get dressed or go up and down the stairs without getting help from somebody else. Jane was handling everything with love for Stephen, but grows weary as time goes by; she had to deal with the children, house chores, and look after her husband with great care. She encounters Jonathan Jones, played by Charlie Cox, at rocky times, and eventually falls in love with him. But instead of blaming her, Stephen respects the choice she had made for her life. After all, she did her best, which can be seen in Jane Hawking’s line: “I have loved you, and I did my best.”

A distinctive characteristic of the film is the attitude of Stephen Hawking towards the surrounding incidents. He never

gives up, no matter how harsh a hardship may be. Despite his struggles in life, his battle with the disease, Stephen keeps a positive attitude on life. Even when Jane had to left after everything she had done for him, he does not let himself be discouraged. Though he may feel frustrated, he does not give up hope, and this is what he holds on to. There should be a number of virtues people can learn from his life, but it is this hope that ST selects as the best one in The Theory of Everything .

“However bad life may seem, where there is life, there is hope.”
