Are you interested in trying a new sport? Do you want to play games that do not require any physical contact? Do you want to participate in a sport that can be played by both genders at the same time? Here is the sport that is just perfect for you. Ultimate Frisbee, also known as Frisbee, is a game played by flinging a disc. One team is composed of 7 players, and there is a defense and an offense side. When the offense team is attacking, they grab the disc and attempt to pass it to the opposite end zone. While the offense players are passing and trying to get the disc to the goal, the defense players are trying to hinder the offense players from passing the disc to one another. The defense players cannot touch the disc while it is still inside a player’s hand. However, they can touch the disc while it is in the air. Points are scored by passing the disc to a teammate in the opposing end zone. Another basic rule requires players to stop taking any step while holding the disc. When there are interceptions, incomplete passes, or passes that are out of bounds, the teams are required to switch positions. This sport is famous in the U.S. In Korea, however, it is difficult to find people who play this game because there are not enough fields available for accommodation.
ST interviewed Park Hye-Bin (Organic Materials and Fiber engineering, 11), who is the president of the Soongsil ultimate frisbee team called ‘SSUF’. ST: What is the charm of the Ultimate Frisbee? Park: Here are some of the charms of the Ultimate Frisbee that appealed to us. Firstly, it is a team sport. Secondly, there are only a few sports that can be played with a mixed gender team. Thirdly, the simple acts of throwing and receiving the disc are considered as fun. Finally, there is a feeling of excitement when you are able to score. Catching the disc at the end zone is also very thrilling. ST: What is the benefit of playing the Ultimate Frisbee? Park: The greatest benefit of this game is the fun that you get out of playing the sport. You can also feel a sense of accomplishment when the disc is thrown up in the air and finally lands where you want it to. Moreover, it can improve your overall wellbeing. ST: Can you introduce the leagues or tournaments that were held in Korea? Park: Two leagues, which were organized by the Korea Ultimate Players Association (KUPA), were held in April and September. There was a beach hat tournament in Busan, as well as other hat tournaments or team tournaments that were held by anybody who wanted to play. In addition, the SSUF organized the Soongsil Hat Tournament that was held on July. To sum up, there are games being held at least once a month all over Korea.
