On September 8, the 8th regular concert of Abandonness Orchestra was held in Reverend Han Kyungchik Memorial Hall. In the first part of the show, they played Egmont Overture Op.84 of L. v. Beethoven and Concerto for 2 Flute & Orchestra in G Major of D. Cimarosa. In the second part, they played Symphony No.4 “Italian” in A Major Op.90 of F. Mendelssohn. After the second play, the hall resounded with applause. Abandonness finished the concert with encore.

ST interviewed the president of Abandonness Orchestra, Kang Yu-na(School of Electrical Engineering, 14).
ST: What does ABANDONNESS mean?
Kang: This is a compound of ‘Abandonne’(music term meaning ‘freewheelingly’) and ‘ss’(acronym for Soongsil).
ST: How is the orchestra composed?
Kang: There are a total of 40 people. Part is divided into violin, cello, clarinet, flute, trumpet, horn, etc. There are instruments necessary for the Philharmonic Orchestra.
ST: How long do you practice for the concert?
Kang: First, we have a regular time to practice for 3 to 6 hours per week during the school year. And just before the concert, we go to a music camp for two weeks. We gather in the practice room every morning at 9:00 and start to practice performance and finish at 06:00 during music camp. In addition, we often practice under the guidance of our part leader
ST: How do you deal with mistakes during a performance?
Kang: It is most important to keep up the pace. When we make a mistake on stage, it can throw us into confusion and make us lose concentration on following part. Even if we make mistakes, we focus on conductor’s direction, kapellmeister and the sound of other members again. We boldly forget the mistake as it is already ‘spilt milk’.
ST: What do you want to deliver to Soongsilians through this concert?
Kang: Through the show, I want Soongsilians to relax and become refreshed from their hectic lives.
ST: Lastly, do you want to say something to readers?
