On April 3, Tuesday, SSU held the opening ceremony of the Virtual Reality Experience Zone in Pyongyang Soongsil Campus at the Reverend Han Kyungchik Memorial Hall inside the campus. In the experiential zone, the students can experience various places in Pyongyang Soongsil Campus that have been moved as a VR . Students can move around the campus, as well as see the main hall of the university and the lecture room of the Pyongyang Soongsil campus during the 1930s.
In 1897, a missionary named William Baird established ‘Soongsil Institute’ in Pyongyang. It was recognized as the 'first four-year university in Korea' in 1908. In 1938, it was the only university in Korea that voluntarily abolished the school against shrine worship and kept the national pride and loyalty. As the only separated university in Korea, the school has restored the Soongsil Campus in Pyongyang with the hope of unification.
The Virtual Reality Experience Zone was commissioned in October 2017 in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the establishment of SSU, and it was completed in February 2018. The professor of the School of Architecture had worked on the CAD drawing of the main building. Based on the 3D modeling work, the research team of Global Media School has built the VR contents production and simulation environment.
