Media have developed along with the change in media environment and the emergence of various new media. If the usual forms of media (e.g., radio, television, Internet, and social networking sites) suddenly disappear, our daily lives will
undoubtedly become more difficult because the main function of the media is communication, which makes our lives more
convenient. Functioning as a means of communication, the media also connect areas beyond human reach. However, it is worth contemplating whether the ‘convenience’ given to us by the development of the media conveys full value of ‘happiness’ to humans.
The first reason is because digital divide can arise from the development of media. The proliferation of various forms of media is creating qualitative differences in access and utilization of information services. In other words, the capacity in the use of media is unequal among individuals, and it can lead to the polarization of media utilization. We are likely to believe that people who are fully exposed to the media and capable of utilizing the media can experience contentment. However, this is not always the case. Even among those with good access to the media and new technologies through the Internet are divided in terms of quantity and quality of information, and the polarization of information settles within them.
Next, the improper use of media fails to convey the true value of happiness to people. Media were originally created to help people efficiently share their ideas and communicate with one another. However, one important function of the media enabling communication is not working properly. People should distinguish personal, collective, and social communication in the network space connected with many people and they should properly utilize them. It seems that the media itself cannot determine the happiness of the people, but how people use and view the media seem to determine happiness. One of the first ways of using media for personal enjoyment is distinguishing the purpose of media and
using it for the right purpose. An example of personal communication is a conversation between you and me. This is an informal and unstructured conversation, an example of a light conversation between friends. Collective communication is a formal communication, and social communication is a communication in which the participants tend to achieve common goals through communication. After classifying the purpose of media usage, the users of the media should be able to distinguish which type of media is well suited for their purpose and circumstances.
Moreover, in social media, one should be able to distinguish what to say from what not to say. People should clarify what their purpose is regarding the use of social media. Some might use social media to share information, and others for selfexpression.
Therefore, the purpose of using social media should be made clear to avoid confusion. Second, we should actively use new media to search for individual characteristics. If we can discover our interests and values through the use of media, it will certainly contribute to our satisfaction. Facebook, which is a representative example of social media, can be used to get information in the field of interest with a simple search, and people can also click on the like button on the website that they are interested in to get constant information from it. When using media as a means of communication with others, an individual is also an active player, who is establishing his own culture through active selection, and creating a network of individuals who seek happiness.
It is definitely true that the development of media has brought convenience. However, for people to be happy with the
development of media, the media should be used enhance the people’s lives and identities as individuals. If you can build your own identity through active selection, relationships with other people, and your own network, then you can use media to make yourself happy.
