When people write a letter of self-introduction, there is often one section where you discuss your hobby. Nowadays, however, people are too busy studying and working, and most of them do not have a proper answer when asked about hobbies. ST introduces different hobbies that can enrich your life, and present you with pure happiness. ...................................................Ed

‘Work and Life Balance, YOLO, Value Consumption.’ These are some phrases that represent the circumstances of modern society in which people cannot enjoy their life because of work and anxiety toward the future. Those phrase focus on ‘the present me,’ which we put aside for the future. This is related to how you will use your present time as ‘totally yours.’

Modern people who have been seeking to spend their time efficiently are not familiar with spending their time entirely on their own but current social trends reveal it is more important to spend your time ‘for yourself.’ This begins with discovering activities that you find worthy. We call such an activity a ‘hobby.’ ‘Taking a break while doing what you like’ is the modern meaning of a hobby, and the need for a hobby.

The following phenomena can be seen as pieces of evidence in this context. According to the Joongang Ilbo, the number of posts on hobbies, as uploaded in Instagram, in 2017 increased by 95 percent, compared to that in 2016. Similarly, it can be found in consumption. According to a survey conducted by BC Card and the Korea Trend Research Institute, the cost of hobbies was ranked second (35.5%) by respondents last year.

Am I not as important now as I am in the future? If you’re looking for an activity that is valuable to ‘you’ at present, pay attention to the following information on hobbies. Since the modern meaning of hobby has been changed, new ways of enjoying hobbies have been developed. Next, we will introduce new forms of enjoying hobbies, and new hobbies one can start enjoying.

< NEW FORM OF HOBBY >

- Curation Services & Offline Platforms

Since hobbies have grown as industries, a service called ‘Hobby Curation Service’ was established. It started by finding the most suitable hobby for a person in the age of information overload. Hobby curation services, such as ‘Hobby box,’ ‘Hobby in the Box,’ and ‘Hobbyful,’ provide various themes from crafts like making leather bracelets to entertainment packages like magic and drones. Other than letting you experience different hobbies, they also help you enjoy hobbies you have always wanted to try. Such services offer online courses on site, as well as suggest venues where you can benefit from offline courses. Platforms like ‘Soomgo’ and ‘Kmong’ promote individual talent and benefit, and contribute to the diversity of hobbies and improved accessibility.

- Community of Hobbyists

Other than learning from the platform, people can also network with others who share the same hobby. They can form a community of readers or artists. Such gatherings deepen each other’s interest in a particular hobby. Although there is no specific curriculum or agenda, getting together with people who have the same interest is part of enjoying the hobby.

< SPORTS: Free Diving >

Those who want to swim freely in the sea may enjoy free diving. Free diving involves getting into the water without using an oxygen canister. By relying on your own breathing capacity, it is quite different from scuba diving. If you heard the story on free diving, you might wonder, ‘Is that possible? It’s hard to hold your breath for a minute.’ However, static breathing (being suspended in water while holding your breath) is an act that is different from simply holding your breath. Practice and training can increase the length of time from which you can hold your breath. Since it is also a safety-related activity, training is an essential course for beginners. Still, you might find yourself falling into the charm of free diving during the course of such training.

< PHOTO: Toy Camera>

Many people often say, ‘What’s left is a photo.’ This is because a photo freezes time, and it allows us to share memories that used to be only in our heads. Nowadays, with analogue sensitivity gaining the spotlight again, analogue-type, film cameras are making a comeback. Among them, I would like to introduce the toy camera. Essentially, it began as a plaything. Is there any other item that can evoke nostalgia like this? You should not expect great picture quality, but it has its own charm. Also, the small size of the camera offers great portability, and it is fun to carry like a toy anytime, anywhere. Toy cameras can be assembled, and used freely. Other than the film format, toy cameras also come in digital versions.

< ART: String Art >

String art expresses the visual effects of the beauty of curves out of dots and straight lines. Main materials are mainly threads and nails. String art’s origin can be traced to teaching mathematics, though it has evolved into a field of art in the modern era. Rather than simple painting, it can be expressed in a more unusual form by taking advantage of the style of art. String art can be made easier and more beautiful as interior accessories and decorations. Since its practicality is high thanks to being grafted with other types of crafts, it has its own aesthetic charm. With these three ingredients—wooden plates, nails, threads—the preparation for the artwork as a form of self-expression is complete.

< PROCESS: Cocktail Brewing >

If you like drinking, you might have dreamed of hosting a party at home like ‘OOBAR’ with your friends. Don’t you think it would be fantastic to make your own drinks as well as your side dishes? Then, you can take the first step by learning to make cocktail. It can be learned through online and offline lessons. You can enroll in an offline class, which is more earnest and professional, but if you feel uncomfortable attending offline classes, you can imply watch how-to videos on YouTube. This evening, you can start with a simple cocktail by using only a bottle of vodka and orange juice, both of which you can buy at a nearby market. On a hard day’s evening, a cup of self-made cocktail can change the mood in your room instantly.
