Soongsilians must take Chapel classes. ST listened to Soongsilians opinion on Chapel, and introduced Chapel classes in other universities---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ed

Soongsilian should not forget to go to the Han Kyungchik Memorial Hall once a week during the semester. In there, they complete the Chapel for 6 semesters, which is a required subject and graduation requirement. How does Soongsilian think about it?

 Soongsilians:

The following statistics, according to a survey conducted on Soongsilians, show about only 23.9% of the 71 people "satisfied" with Chapel. However 76.1% of Soongsilians are not "satisfied" with it. There is the prevailing opinion that Soongsilians hate the coercion and non-arbitrary of Chapel, as one of graduation requirements. Next, the majority said they were spending their time unproductive and getting nothing except “cultural Chapels.” Soongsilians, Christian, aid that Chapel, which is not a Sunday worship, is meaningless. On the other hand, there is a positive review that says, “It's not a sermon under pressure, but a subject that can be healing during busy semesters with a score of 0.5.” However, the overall satisfaction level is significantly lower, with less than 24 out of 100 people. At this point, we are curious about the Chapel in other universities. ST selected Ewha Womans University and Sejong University as the representative universities of Seoul that were founded on Christian ideology.

  •  Kim (Communication & Media, 19, Ewha Womans University):

We have to take 8 semesters with a score of zero, and if you miss three or more times, you'll get a non-pass. There are some types of Chapel that will interest students, such as “movie Chapel” and “ensemble Chapel,” which is usually progressed by inviting famous people or lecturers. Overall, the students’ perception is negative, with a class review average of 1.64. Participation level is very low, using cell phone during worship. Most students don’t feel the need to do it. I'm most dissatisfied with not giving grades for taking c lasses on time. Religious preaches tend to be less than one might think, so that Chapel is less burdensome for non-Christians but I don’t like to be forced.

  •  Kang (Department Hospitality, Tourism and Foodservice Management, 19, Sejong University):

Chapel is not required because it is one of the designated courses that we can choose. In the class review from Everytime app, there is a prevailing view of “a profit-taking lecture,” and most of students’ are satisfied with the class, which has a review of “a lecture where students get score during sitting down and have time to heal in spite of no religion,” and “a class where students can appreciate performances.” It got the latter part of 4 points in class review. We get pass or fail and take 0.5 score and fill up to 2 if only attend well and submit short comments. The downside is that we only have 9:30 a.m. classes and Chapel is not in depth for theology.

How are the three schools different? Compared directly with Sejong University, we can see that “compulsion” causes students to resist and become dissatisfied. That would probably lead to inefficiency. Whether it's about religion or not. Schools need to reorganize the system to provide a voluntary educational environment. Isn't that a desirable role for schools?
