Is it because the world is too fancy and messy? Some people prefer being ‘normal.’ Let’s find out what’s going on in the world with ST! ...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Ed

People in their 20s are more enthusiastic about simple living and are more interested in cute cafes than crowded streets. The way such ordinary people react to simple changes can be linked to the newly coined word, ‘Normal Crush’. Normal Crush is a combination of being ‘ordinary’ and ‘being stuck’. In short, it refers to a phenomenon in which people are fed up with colorful and provocative stuff, and are now more interested in ordinary experiences.

A few years ago, people in their 20s and 30s used the word ‘FLEX’ to boast luxury goods and other items on social networks. These days, they have generally shared very typical things. Until now, the word ‘Normal’ hasn’t referred to something positive. It’s neither good nor bad, but now people are seeing the word in a new light. People who are tired of the burden and the fatigue in modern society have begun to reinterpret the word ‘Normal’.

Observational Program

“I Live by Myself”, which airs every Friday on MBC, is a documentary-style entertainment program that features the daily lives of celebrities. It caters to the growing number of single-parent families and single men and women. Moreover, observational entertainment shows like “Bachelorhood” and “The Taste of My Wife” are gaining popularity. The easygoing appearance of a star draws massive sympathy from viewers who have turned their attention to ordinary beings.

Vlog, SNS Story

Vlog, a combination of the words video and blog, refers to an ‘Internet video that captures one’s daily life’. Its content reflects the characteristics of young people seeking Normal Crush. Like the Internet generation, they are used to making digital videos on their own and uploading them on YouTube, or setting up their own SNS. However, most of the videos are focused on capturing their daily lives that are not usually glamorous.

Normcore, No-Wire

‘Normcore’ means casual but unusual fashion. Although it feels comfortable like basic fashion items, such as T-shirts, knitwear, jeans, and sneakers, it is a fashion choice that has its own merits. These elements that can assist ordinary people through the pursuit of natural beauty make the Normcore style less fashionable. Before, the sexiness of tightness in women’s underwear is emphasized, but, now, the comfortable wearing of a bra that supports the chest without a wire or padding is emphasized. Simple makeup techniques, which drastically reduce the number of cosmetic products that are applied, can also be called Normal Crush.

We are currently the only arbiter of Normal Crush. Feeling glamorous and comfortable with the direction of your life is Normal Crush. If we, including those of us who are not happy with many things, feel vain about filling things up to get ahead of others, why don’t we change our standard of living?
