University tuition ranges from 3,000,000 to 5,500,000 won per semester. It is expensive. A four-year payment of 7,000,000 to 9,000,000 won every year makes it more difficult than you can imagine. It’s like opening a small Internet shopping mall. It is a burdensome amount for an ordinary family to pay. What are some ways to ease the burden of tuition other than scholarships, working in the school, and student loans? The easiest way to pay less for tuition without generating additional income is to attend the “Summer and Winter Sessions.” A seasonal semester (Summer and Winter sessions) offers classes during the vacation periods. Many students are attending the seasonal semester mainly for “credit upgrading.” They can upgrade it by course repetition.
There are two ways to utilize the seasonal semester efficiently. First is to return to school during the seasonal semester. Second is to fill remaining credits with seasonal semester classes. At Soongsil University, the fee for seasonal term is 82,000 won per grade. Classes for 1.5 hours and 1 credit are 123,000 won. For 2 hours and 1 or 2 credits are 164,000 won. Classes for 3 hours and 2 or 3 credits are 246,000 won. Finally, classes for 4 hours and 3 credits are 328,000 won. Most Universities in Seoul charge similar fees for seasonal semester courses. Students who take nine credits in the seasonal semester can complete it for approximately one million won. Considering that the tuition for a semester is around 4 million won and the average credit is 18, a seasonal semester is quite affordable. Students who return to school in the seasonal semester can fill the required number of credits at an affordable price. For students with residual credits for graduation, it will be much more economical to attend the seasonal semester.
Today, Soongsil University has a credit registration for students who need more credit though he attended school for more than eight semesters and need less than nine credits. In the case of one to three credits, students only need to pay 1/6 of the tuition. For four to six credits, only 1/3 of the tuition is charged. Furthermore, credit for registration of seven to nine credits only, one half of the tuition is charged. Students must pay full tuition if they need more than 10 credits. On average, a four-year course in a university in Seoul costs roughly 4 million won. Thus, nine credits will cost about 2 million won.
Unfortunately, Soongsil University does not allows students to return to school in the seasonal semester for completing their remaining credits. Dankook University also states that students on a leave of absence will not be included in the list of graduates even if they meet the graduation requirements through the seasonal semester. On the other hand, Chung-Ang University, which is located near Soongsil University, allows students to graduate after the seasonal semester, but does not allow students to return to school during the seasonal semester. In the case of Hanyang University, students are prohibited from returning to school and registering for remaining credits, and also taking seasonal classes if they did not register in the previous semester. With excessive education costs in the Republic of Korea becoming a huge problem day after day, it seems everyone will benefit if it is possible to return to school in the seasonal semester and register for remaining credits.
