Coronavirus has become a huge part of our lives. Emotions such as depression and anxiety caused by the coronavirus are compared to colors. ST interviewed a student who experienced emotional changes due to the coronavirus.

Depression is spreading like a virus due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation. Psychiatrist Kim Ji-yong, who appeared on tvN’s Uquiz on the Block, said, “Most patients in the department of medicine decreased in the first half of 2020, but the number of psychiatric patients increased.” In fact, the number of patients that were prescribed anti-anxiety drugs to help ease symptoms of anxiety increased by more than 25% in the first half of last year compared to 2019.

‘Corona Blue’ is a combination of COVID-19 and the color blue which symbolizes depression. The causes of Corona Blue are known to be the fear of getting infected as the number of confirmed people increases, the frustration of not being able to meet often and go out because of social distancing rule, and the anger caused by economic losses as the economy worsens. The first major symptom is insomnia. People can’t sleep more than usual, and even if they do fall asleep, they get symptoms of waking up in the middle of the night. Second, there are symptoms of stuffy nose, throbbing headache, and indigestion.

Feelings of depression over ‘anger’ coined the term ‘Corona Red’ The feeling of anger has intensified since social distancing has been strengthened. According to a recent survey by the Graduate School of Health at Seoul National University on COVID-19 news and emotions, anxiety accounted for the largest portion, followed by anger. Compared to early August and late August, during which social distancing rule was strengthened, the proportion of anger increased significantly from 62.7% in early August to 47.5% in anxiety and 25.3% in anger at the end of August.

Finally, following Blue and Red, ‘Corona Black’ has recently emerged, referring to the idea that everything is bleak. In particular, vulnerable people with serious economic difficulties, such as losing their jobs, and small business owners are directly affected. It is also common among self-employed people.

This is an interview with a college student who is majoring in computer science at SSU.

1. Do you think you are experiencing depression from COVID-19? If so, which one do you think it is?
Lee Ga-eul (fictitious name): I think it was red not too long ago.

2 What causes depression?
Lee: It wasn’t the college life I wanted. Since I only did my homework at home, I didn’t want to study more and I felt pathetic about myself. I felt motivated to live while visiting new places and traveling, but these days, I feel lethargic because I am staying at home. Moreover, it is even more frustrating because of the fact that the situation may end indefinitely.

3 What did you do to solve this problem?
Lee: I moved my body when I felt depressed. After taking the certification exam, I started buying oil pastels, and I was able to improve myself by doing things that I could achieve with consistency. I also met as many people as I could non-face-to-face. I increased the number of video calls, talked to my close friends on the phone often, and told them honestly about my depression.

In order to overcome the depression caused by COVID-19, first, it is important to be careful and not have excessive fear. Rather than suffering from unnecessary anxiety and stress due to the information distributed indiscriminately through SNS(Social Network Service), people should remain calm and trust in the information released by public institutions, such as the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Second, it is important to continue to communicate through phone calls and text messages in order to avoid the feeling of isolation and have a sense of normalcy. In addition, having an indoor hobby or taking a light walk is helpful.

Seok Jung-ho, a professor of psychiatry at Gangnam Severance Hospital, said, “Koreans are not used to talking about depression or difficulty in mind. I hope Koreans can naturally talk and share the pain and difficulty in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.” Corona blue is a depression caused by a disastrous situation. You need to have courage to talk about the difficulties that you are facing to mental health professionals and the people around you in order to recover your mind, not to find problems within yourself.
