On October 8, SSU held the ‘124th anniversary service’ in the Kim Deok-yun chapel of the Reverend Han Kyungchik Memorial Hall. The service was a commemoration of SSU’s anniversary on October 10. Due to COVID-19, the ceremony was broadcasted live on SSIZEN.NET.
This ceremony suggested the directionality of SSU in the advent of the post-coronavirus pandemic era, conveying a special request for Soongsilians. Vice-president of SSU, Lee Won-cheol, said that SSU must strengthen its Christian identity, and launch a new education paradigm leading up to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The 15th president of SSU, Jang Beomsik, is confident that SSU can be a protagonist in the post-coronavirus pandemic era, educating outstanding individuals for the society through practical education amid the difficult situation.
SSU was known as the first university in Korea that was established by missionary William Baird in 1897. SSU is also known for refusing shrine worship, amid the policy of annihilating the Korean race during the occupation era by the Japanese Empire. Officials voluntarily closed the university in 1938.
