The Disabled Student Support Center opened in November, 2007. It is located at Room 117 in the Jo Man-sik Memorial Building. The Disabled Student Support Center (DSSC), which was first established at Daegu University in 2000, supports disabled students’ campus lives with welfare, education and consultation. There are many useful facilities such as a restroom, pc room, library, education center, guardian shelter, etc. At the DSSC, student workers from SSU help disabled students. DSSC not only provides room, but also schedules various programs such as study groups, social adapting programs and a job network program for the disabled. On December 29, the DSSC went to Choongmoo Art Hall to see the musical ‘Hairspray’ as a part of their program to develop the relationships of disabled students. An attendant in this event said, “The musical was both instructive and interesting. It was a great opportunity to associate with other handicapped people.”
DSSC has many diverse programs for disabled students.
However, the rate of disabled students who actually use DSSC was low. There are about 39 handicapped students in SSU, but only 7 of them use DSSC. An anonymous student said, “Please think DSSC as comfortable place for having rest and come to the DSSC frequently.”
The disabled hope for the DSSC to play a role of administrative and human supporter, which can meet the handicapped students’ individual needs and maximize the existing resources and infrastructures.
