Taean was polluted by an oil spill which occurred on Dec. 7 in the Yellow Sea near the Taean Peninsula in South Chungcheong Province. This accident happened because a Samsung Heavy Industries barge collided with a Hong Kong-registered oil tanker. SSU have volunteered four times to help clean the polluted coastline of Taean. Also SSU has donated relief supplies. During last winter vacation, Samsung Life volunteer corps, an engineering college students’ association and the department of political science and diplomacy students’ union volunteered to help clean residue from beaches. The number of volunteers was around 100 at first on Dec. 27, 2007. However, due to the overwhelming responses from students including Philippine Overseas Volunteer Corps, India Education Journey Team, a social volunteer group Darum Sarang, and the Student Union the number soon reached 255. Moreover, 15 school staff members participated. Kim Jun-tae(Senior, Electoronic Engineering), who joined this work said, “I cannot say that I was a big help to the people of Taean by working a short time, but it was definitely a worthwhile time for me. I hope that this work will not be temporary.” Kim Dong-hyun (Senior, Physics) also said, “I saw a future of Taean there. The people worked really hard as it was their own business.” The expenses of the volunteer work were paid Students are volunteering at Taean for by the school, because of lack of donations. 350 people were given certificates. As time goes on, the number of volunteers visiting Taean is decreasing. Officials of the section of Volunteer Service and Scholarship say they still need help from people.
