Dreams Come True

Anh Byung-kwon admitted to enter the doctor’s course without the Master by the MIT. He made a theory that robot can be transformed automatically. ST asked him how could he accomplish this result by himself............................................................Ed.

Could Bumble-bee from the movie, Transformer, be a reality? ST interviewed Ahn, Byung-Geoun, an alumnus of Soongsil University who had majored in physics and became popular for a theory to realize this idea. His theory is that the parts of cubes consisting of a robot can be transformed by moving by themselves just like cells of a human. With the results of his great research, he earned admission to MIT(Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to enter the doctoral course without a Master’s degree and will receive a full scholarship.

As a child, he didn’t have such a special talent. Since he has had both passionate and patient, however, his present achievements are not surprising. Maybe, we can expect a second Einstein in his answer like this. “Although Einstein got a Bachelor’s degree, he created the Theory of Relativity. As he was beyond what I am, I dreamed of him.”

1. Recently, you’ve got an admission to MIT and are going to enter MIT’s doctoral course. Would you tell Soongsilians how you feel?

It was my dream to enter MIT’s doctoral course when I was an elementary school student. MIT is said to be the best in this field I am studying now. Also the professor who has been my role model is a professor at MIT. I am very pleased that my dream came true and I would be able to study further. In addition, I am content with the results of my research.

2. When did you formulate this plan, Self-Reconfigurable Robotics?

While I was visiting MIT after university graduation, I planned to make this project.

3. What did you get this idea from?

With my interest in this field, while I have read and studied many theses and simulated researches from others, I thought about the theory with which could make this research a reality. That’s why I started this research.

4. What specific field are you going to study in MIT?

I will major in Computer Engineering in MIT, which is the same study as in the Computer Department carried out by graduate students. I’d like to study further in the field of Robot and Artificial Intelligence added to my research to be done here.

5. The results can be an application to many fields such as medical treatment, space shuttles, satellites and so on. In what area would you like to apply your results or want to develop more using them?

I’d like to help people in order to make their lives more comfortable and advantageous and hope you’ll enjoy yourselves with my research.

6. When were you first interested in this field?

When I was young, I liked assembling machinery and doing computer programming very much. I used to assemble things such as radios several times and I started computer programming when I was a first-grader at an elementary school.

7. Could you make an simple explanation of your theory, ‘Cubeshaped Generic Distribute Self-Reconfigurable Robotic’ which you have studied?

I have developed the idea that a self-reconfigurable robot can be changed by itself literally and have made a smaller, simpler and more comfortable one in order to control it more easily.

8. I hear that you studied foreign theses alone to develop your theory. What made you study by yourself?

When I was an third-grader in middle school, I studied teaching materials at the university level. I have studied it steadily though it was hard to study at my age. In university, Professor Lee Nam-yong has helped me with academic studies in many

respects, and I have experienced a lot of things. I think all of them can be helpful to me.

9. What made you decide to major in physics? And what was your advantage as a physicist?

I wanted to study Computer Engineering at the graduate school. Because of this, I thought I had to study basic knowledge. Therefore, I decided to enter the Physics

department. in which I could study hardware and theories on physics easily in majoring in physics since I had studied software for a long time.

10. You had spent time researching this theory for three years after graduation. Have you got any stress or complaint from others?

I decided to enter the graduate school. So, my parents encouraged me instead of giving me stress or complaint. I did my best to study in this field because it was related to what I would plan to research in the graduate school. Also, I didn’t feel

uncomfortable and rather made a lot of efforts as there are a lot of schools in the world other than MIT.

11. Did you find difficulties while doing research?

No, I didn’t. I even enjoyed my research as I had much interest in this field.

12. What gave you the most help, like professors’ advice or parents’ encouragement?

I counted on my parents’ encouragement and trust. Professor Lee, Nam-Yong,

Professor Kim, Yi-Nam, and Professor Kim, Jin-Han of Soongsil University helped me with a lot of good tips and advice.

13. Did you have a special method in studying? How did your parents teach you?

My parents read from 20 to 30 volumes of books to me before I slept when I was young. So I thought I could comprehend Korean earlier and more easily. After understanding Korean, I used to like to read books in my spare time. My parents didn't force me to only study and I could have various experiences. When I was two, I scattered rice on the floor and played in it like sand. Also, my sister and I blocked a sinkhole to make a pool. They allowed me to do many things, whatever I wanted to do, but they permitted me to quit what I didn’t want to do in the middle. I learned how to play the flute and the clarinet, to swim and ride a snowboard. I got a certificate of qualification to instruct snowboarding. I was one of the founders of our club Pengicos in which members are drawing comics together and did some

activities at a students’ association in Engineering Department in Soongsil University. My parents made me realize that a variety of experiences are important in life.

14. Would you recommend some advice to experience in university to Soongsilians?

First, become a sincere student.

It is important to make a sincere campus life just as you learn to use an instrument in a university like you learn how to chopsticks to eat. Second, you should experience many experiments and activities without being afraid as students are permitted to make mistakes within a university. Plus, go listen to great professors and ask their advice because they are willing to welcome and talk with you. Finally, if you get a part time job, you must find something to be associated with your future. Four years can be very long or short. I hope you can take much

advantage of it.

15. What was your dream when young?

My internet ID is ‘dran’. This means Dr.An which was made when I am first grader in elementary school. Because, I didn’t know the word Ph.D at that time, my ID is dran. When I started studying computer science, I had a dreaming of Dr.An’s Computer Laboratory. Although Einstein got a Bachelor’s degree, he discovered the Theory of Relativity. As he was more than what I was, I dreamed of him.

16. Do you have something to say to Soongsilians in particular?

Even if many great seniors are working in many various fields now I expect that much more great students can graduate from Soongsil University. If our university continued since in Pyeongyang, it will continue to grow and get better. Still. it’s not all. If you work hard in your fields on your own, I think it will become synergy and we can make our university one of the best.

17. Finally, what kind of person do you want to be remembered as?

I want to be remembered as a Soonglian who can enjoy myself while studying and enjoying several things in Soongsil University. I am the Soongsilian to be with you at any time. While interviewing Ahn, Byung-Geoun, he reminded me of the sentence ‘Dreams come true.’ An old picture of the MIT Computer Science Department was hung on the wall of Mr. Ahn’s room. He used to resolve his mind looking at it whenever he woke up in the morning. Eventually, he has made it something which he has dreamed of. He enjoyed his research rather than merely studying it. The reason that I think he is great is not that he has got an admission to MIT and is receiving a full scholarship but that he has made his dream come true with his own efforts without giving up his dream. There is a saying, ‘A genius can’t beat a hard worker, but the hard worker is defeated by a person who finds it delightful to work.’
