and Copycat Crime

 

  There are some kids who take tips from the crime on the media. What do you think about these things happen in thisworld? What is the media doing in copycat crime? Let’s think about it..................................................................................................Ed.



  These days crimes that bring about societal confusion are increasing in Korea, like the kidnappings in Anyang. Mass media presented the scene of this crime and the criminal. Each broadcasting station has showed it in the Chase Program. This program said ‘The object of our program is to telecast the criminal and help the criminal investigation’. Though it seems that broadcasting may help arrest the criminal, copycat crimes can happen irrespective of their intention. Moreover  cpycat criminals said “I could study the criminal method from the Chase Program.” Is it possible we are away from TV without watching it? We should consider this: though he Chase Program actually can help the prevention of crimes and the criminal investigations, aren’t they inciting the copycat crimes too?



What is a copycat crime?


  A copycat crime is when someone commits a crime imitating previous criminal ases sing his or her indirect experience through mass media such as movies, TV rograms or novels. The seriousness of copycat crimes spreads into our society. eenagers lacking in self-control and good judgement copy similar crimes. Teenagers re even proud of imitating crimes which they have watched in TV programs. Since hey are in the period of full of bravado and heroism, they can commit crimes imitating the criminal method which are not filtered out.



What influences copycat crimes?


  We are influenced directly or indirectly by the media. Crimes can be copied from a ariety of sources. Complex media like criminal movies, informations from the internet, news, and Chase Programs can cause crimes to arise. According to the statistical data, news and Chase Programs influence more than criminal movies or novels. When people come in contact with crimes from movies, people accept them s ‘not-real’. But when people encounter them on the news or Chase Programs, they ccept them as ‘real’ so these kinds of media can directly effect copycat crimes much more. People feel that the methods shown in real broadcasts such as news re ore useful than those shown in movies. Online games are the second source of copycat crimes for teenagers. Online games are filled with excessive violent scenes. Teenagers who play such games that they can confuse cyberspace with reality. So they may commit incidental actions apart from their will and intention.



What are the causes of copycat crimes?


  The cause of copycat crimes has not been determined clearly yet. But the most probable influential is the direct exposure of media violence. The longer teenagers are exposed to bloody and violent scenes, the more violent they become. In ddition when even adults continue to be exposed to violence, they can be affected. When people are exposed to violence at first, they get a shock. But in case that people continue to be exposed to violence, their shock becomes weak and they feel less intense about violence and people expect higher intensity of violence. The continued exposure to violence can make people learn criminal methods through the ccumulated indirect experiences. Moreover people come to know how to use iolence effectively. Finally people may copy the violent cases from broadcasting. hese days problems of Chase programs come into the spotlight. These programs re elevising more violent scenes and showing criminal methods in detail so as to ttract ore TV viewers. They even open the criminal records to the public. It is natural hat other similar crimes can arise irrespective of the producers’ intention.

How can we reduce copycat crimes?


  We need to plan another alternative in order o reduce copycat crimes. First of all, edia should obey the rules of the Ministry of Information and Communication and he orean Broadcasting Commission. Although there are already rules for television rating, they are not observed strictly now. Hence, we should describe the rating of violence and follow a strict rating systems. According to research, children who encounter violence before and after ten years old, they can show more offensive actions. So media is required to keep TV rating rules for our children’s social education and their future. If our children protect themselves from violence, we can reduce copycat crimes. Also, TV program makers which are handling crimes must ollow the strict ratings rules and be responsible for the effects of the programs to rotect our children and make a better future. Those programs currently are roadcasting too much and too often. So they must avoid explanations of criminal methods and criminal records in detail. Lately Chase programs showing crimes are iving rise to severe side effects on ‘copycat crimes’. Therefore, media makers must o their best to produce good programs and not give rise to such social problems nd copycat crimes anymore. They firmly take the broadcasting into consideration when making programs with a view to not only help arrest the crimes but also reduce the copycat crimes. ST
