A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

As the weather becomes colder, the trees along the streets are donning their winter coats, and the rustling of leaves swaying in the breeze can be heard. Beneath the blue, crisp winter sky, lovely shops lining the streets are glowing with yellow lights, painting a scene that is both chilly and inviting. Hearts brim with emotions of love, nostalgia for the year that is ending, and excitement for Christmas. To celebrate this special season, ST is introducing Christmas literature that adds a touch of warmth and vibrancy.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly moneylender who cares only about wealth. He is stingy with others, and often berates his employees. One Christmas Eve, the ghost of his long-deceased friend appears to warn him. Accompanied by three spirits, Scrooge is shown his past, present, and future. After witnessing his grim fate, Scrooge undergoes a profound transformation, and sheds his miserly ways. This novel plays a crucial role in shaping modern Christmas traditions, and redefines the true meaning of Christmas.

The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

Jim and Della are a poor couple deeply in love. As Christmas approaches, they wish to give each other meaningful gifts, but their financial situation makes this difficult. Della sells her beautiful hair to buy Jim a watch chain, while Jim sells his cherished watch to buy Della a set of hair combs. Their sacrifices render their gifts ultimately meaningless, reminding readers that Christmas is not merely about exchanging gifts, but about sharing love and sacrifice.

A Visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore

This poem, often referred to as The Night Before Christmas, has significantly influenced the modern image of Santa Claus. On Christmas Eve, St. Nicholas arrives in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, bringing gifts for children. The poem vividly portrays St. Nicholas’s friendly appearance and actions, stimulating the readers’ imaginations and conveying the excitement and joy of Christmas.

These three works invite us to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, emphasizing the values of love and warm community. In its unique way, each work captures the magic of Christmas, and is sure to leave an unforgettable impression on Soongsilians. This Christmas, why not spend some quality time with loved ones while immersing yourself in these literary treasures, and feeling the true essence of the holiday?
