Design Changes Function: The Implication of the Student Cafeteria Remodeling

ST,

The student cafeteria has recently begun reopening with a fresh new look after remodeling. Many aspects have been redesigned, including diverse seating arrangements, lighting, landscaping elements, and the separation of the dining hall from the kitchen. The remodeling is drawing attention because it is changing how Soongsilians use the cafeteria beyond simple facility improvement.

The previous student cafeteria was mainly a space where students quickly finished their meals and left. The row-style seating layout naturally encouraged short stays, and it was rare for students to remain after eating. However, after the remodeling, various seating options were introduced, including partitioned seats, group tables, oval tables, and sofa-style seating. This changed how the space is used. The area has also been divided into zones, with wall-mounted outlets installed in certain sections. In addition, brighter lighting and a modern color design have made the atmosphere more welcoming. Even after meal service hours of 11:20 a.m. to 2 p.m., students have been observed staying to chat, work on team projects, or study. During exam periods, operating hours were extended from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. through coordination between the Student Council and the Consumers’ Cooperative.

Meanwhile, concerns related to cafeteria use are also being raised. Some Soongsilians pointed out, “It is often inconvenient to study because people leave without cleaning up the food they spilled.” Many say improved etiquette is needed for shared use.
