ST has decided to participate in SSIZEN.NET’s activities. “SSIZEN.NET” is a compound word consisting of “Soongsil” and “netizen.” As an Internet broadcasting station, SSIZEN.NET produces various films, such as those featuring news, music videos, documentaries, advertisements, and movies. The films are produced through several processes, such as planning, shooting a movie, editing, and feedback. The planning stage consists of the idea meeting, proposal and script making, finding the place where the video is to be shot, and casting of the actors. ST has decided to participate in a movie team, but the team has already finished its planning. The title of the movie, as provided by Cho Won-jin (Social Welfare, 12), the director of the movie team, is “Kid-nap”. The team has also made the proposal and script, after which it looked for the place where they were to shoot the movie. Finally, the team cast a child actress after conducting interviews, as well as a senior member of SSIZEN.NET, due to the budget considerations.

ST went to Sadang-dong, Tongjak-ku, Seoul to participate in shooting the movie. The place where the movie was shot was an alley located in a residential area because the topic of the movie was kidnapping. The movie had two

heroines: a child actress and a senior member from SSIZEN.NET. Although the weather was cold that day, everyone involving the child actress made efforts to shoot better scenes. ST picked up the boom mic to participate in the process of shooting the movie. It seemed very easy and simple, but it was certainly not because the person who picked up the boom mic had to wear headphones to check the sound. ST wore the headphones and heard two sounds through them: the sound from the boom mic and that from the tiepin mic. ST had to check if the actors’ voices were clear and if there were extraneous noises, such as from the traffic and the birdcall. Through this experience, ST realized that it is very hard to shoot a movie. Nonetheless, it was a very interesting and valuable experience!

For the next step, ST went through the editing process with staffer Cho from the directing department. To break down the whole editing process, there is a pre-editing part and an actual editing part. In the pre-editing part, the directing department takes the raw film and makes a rough outline based on the written scenario. For starters, Cho

had the video and audio files synced, after which she cut the synced film into short clips to sort out the ones to use for the actual editing part. After watching her do this for a moment, ST gave it an awkward try. As ST was new to the whole process, we did only the easy part: cutting the front and back of the film, where the “Action” and “Cut” signs were. While doing this, ST was timid because we were afraid of messing up the whole film. After that, the actual editing part came. In this part, the staff re-arranges and puts together the small clips from the last part, modifies it, and puts effects from scene to scene. This is usually done by the tech department, adjusting the levels, saturation, hue, and contrast with the greatest care.

The final part that ST tried out was the film fare, which was done only by them. In this fare, the whole staff watched one another’s films. After that came the briefing from the production crew of each film, the chief

manager’s appraisal, and the whole crew’s appraisal. Even though ST had been told beforehand that the fare was to be solemn and serious, it turned out to be more so than expected. ST was used to the jolly and active staffs of SSIZZEN.NET, but they were all quite sober during the fare. Even though the fare was three-hour-long, it seemed that nobody lost his or her concentration. As viewers, ST used to take films only as they were; as producers, however, SSIZEN.NET caught all the details of the film, like the small camera moves, the panning, and the moving. The movie that ST participated in was the last film in the fare. ST covered all the steps, from the actual filming to the editing, but we had not yet seen the finished film. The actual filming process seemed a bit disorderly because it was held on a busy weekend with the child actor, but the finished film was not disorderly at all. The movie was praised by most of the staffers, which made ST feel proud for them, too.

During the try-out, ST was pretty interested and fascinated. Internet broadcasting seemed unfamiliar at first, but it felt good to learn about it. Also, ST felt a bit of shame. The members of the Internet broadcasting team, SSIZEN.NET and ST, are both part of the school’s media. The passionate staffs of SSIZEN.NET served to motivate ST to work even harder. We had mixed feelings of companionship and rivalry. Lastly, ST will end this issue’s STUDENT ACTIVITIES section with the following words from the chief executive, Kim Myung-hwan (The Global School of Media, 11): “Hello! SSIZEN.NET is always working hard to create fun and useful films for our dear Soongsilians. Our films and clips can be watched all the time on our own Website, <http://www.ssizen.net/>. We thank our viewers for their continuous interest and love!”
