Play tennis with SSTC

What do you imagine when you hear the word
tennis? Maybe you imagine a lot of people on a
green court, with rackets, playing tennis with
delight. In South Korea, tennis is no longer a new sport, but it
is not that popular because the lesson fee is high and the training
course is too short. As for us Soongsilians, we can enjoy
tennis more easily than any other person, thanks to our university's
SSTC (Soongsil Tennis Club). Here, ST introduces you
to the Soongsilians’ SSTC. It is the oldest tennis club in
Soongsil University. ST will lead you to the dynamic tennis
world with SSTC for a healthy campus life.
When this ST reporter met the members of SSTC on the
tennis court farther down the road from the playground, the
SSTC members were still playing tennis. On the court, there
were so many village people, but the game of the SSTC members
was the best game on the court. The SSTC members played
tennis on one side and just finished playing on the other side.
Due to the sultry weather, the faces of all the SSTC members
were covered with sweat, and as the tennis ball was passed over
the court, the tension on the court made this ST reporter more
sober during the interview.
During the practice time, ST had a talk with Kim Hyun-guon,
the SSTC president-elect for the next term. He said, “SSTC
offers many lessons to improve one’s skill in tennis. For the
freshmen, they have lessons three times a week, two hours for
each lesson. Vacation is the best time to improve one’s tennis
ability. In summer, SSTC has a training program for the
national contest held every August. Without the regular exercises,
SSTC can freely use the tennis court. Every afternoon, we
play tennis.”
As Kim explained, ST could feel how SSTC makes full use
of its members’ drill time. Also, after the game, the SSTC members
shake hands with one another to show their mutual respect.
ST witnessed how sportsmanship was manifested on the court.
Then ST interviewed an SSTC member, Kwon Ja-kyuong
(Business Administration, 12), who said, “What’s special in
SSTC is that only the freshmen can join it. All the present SSTC
members joined the club when they were still freshmen. I joined
SSTC because it is active and mostly holds outdoor club activities,
unlike the other clubs in SSU. Also, the biggest advantages
of SSTC are these: you can play tennis whenever you want, and
you can develop physical strength. The brisk exchanges
between the senior and junior members are among the charming
features of SSTC.”
SSTC has proven its excellence in many contests. Especially,
in Kyung-In Jigu, SSTC won the 3rd place in the Women’s
Division and the second place in the Men’s Division in the last
national contest. Such national contest is held every August by
the National University Union, and all university clubs can join
it. As it is the biggest contest, it offers huge prizes and big sponsors.
SSTC is practicing for victory in the national contest. ST
expects SSTC to achieve remarkable feats in the said contest.
The SSTC members regularly meet to enjoy tennis, and
spend a lot of time on the court, where the SSTC members shine
brilliantly. While watching the teamwork among the SSTC
members and their training process, ST felt the sportsmanship
and sense of intimacy that existed among the members.
Watching the members easily control the rapid tennis ball with a
single hand, once more, ST realized how charming and attractive
tennis is. Even though we only spent a short time with the
SSTC members, it was quite an honor. President-elect Kim said,
“Next semester, we will recruit vigorous freshmen as new members.
Please don’t hesitate to join our club if you’re interested in
tennis or want to play tennis with joy or to find someone you
can interact with. I hope Soongsil Times also becomes the best
and most widely loved journal."
