“Man makes architecture; architecture makes man. We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us.” As Winston Churchill said, we live in a variety of architectures, and are influenced by architecture. It has the power to shape culture, environment, and history beyond life. Let’s find the power of architecture to create a new culture up close.
It’s right on the campus where we are staying. SSU campus is filled with many buildings that are beyond comparison with any other university. Pay particular attention to the changes in the next scene. This is before and after the construction of the Student Cultural Center. A single photo of this building can show the evolving diversity of the culture on campus. Would our culture be the same as it is now if the building of the Student Cultural Center had a different look, like a playground on the rooftop, or if it is three stories higher than the current building? Let’s imagine. You’ll be even more surprised to learn that these were the ones that came up until the final review of the design.
Similarly, architecture has the power to create new people’s lives and cultures. This is why architects must work on architectural design with a sense of mission and ethics. What kind of culture are you dreaming of in the future city and society? Why don’t we make it with architecture?
