Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ‘Soongsil Peace Unification School’ had been offering online lectures in the past three years, but it has resumed on-site classes this year. The Soongsil Peace Unification School is a two-night, three-day program that all students who take ‘Korean Peninsula peace and unification’ course must attend. The program started with the School of Electrical Engineering and the School of Architecture on March 8th.
The Soongsil Peace Unification School is organized in the following order: ‘Soongsil Unification Man’ held on campus, ‘Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) Unification Man’ held at the Odumountain Unification Observatory, and the ‘Mungyeong Unification Leadership Training Center program’. They participate in programs such as Discussion and the North Korean Culture Talk Concert, ‘Noise Between Floors’. The highlight of the Soongsil Peace Unification School is the final performance, which consists of a unification presentation in the first part and a unification video presentation in the second part.
As we can see from the history of SSU in Pyongyang, the keyword ‘unification’ provides a different meaning for SSU compared to other universities. On this point, this program can be an opportunity for Soongsilians to think again about the future with North Korea. Park Cheonwoong, who participated in the Soongsil Peace Unification School on March 15th, said that it was a meaningful opportunity for him because he was exposed to a variety of perspectives on unification. Soongsil Peace Unification School will be held sequentially until early June.
