Introduction to Electronic Music

In this 206th issue, we explore the theme of “culture.” Among the many cultural elements that transcend borders and generations, music is one of the most universal. To begin this issue, we introduce electronic music, an essential part of modern music and contemporary culture.

Concept and Historical Emergence of Electronic Music

Electronic music uses electronic devices to create, transform, and reproduce sound. Unlike traditional music, it generates new sounds through technology and has become a major movement in modern music. In the early twentieth century, traditional tonality was considered exhausted, and sounds once treated as noise began to be accepted as musical material. Composers such as Edgard Varèse emphasized the exploration of unfamiliar and non-traditional sounds, opening new possibilities for musical expression.

Technological Innovation and the Expansion of Musical Forms

By the mid-twentieth century, experimental approaches such as aleatoric music and serialism expanded the boundaries of music. At the same time, technological development transformed sound production itself. Musique concrète introduced recorded environmental sounds, while electronic sound technology enabled the creation of entirely artificial timbres. Later, computers and Digital-to-Analog Converters became a turning point in electronic music. Experiments at Bell Labs made it possible to convert digital data into sound, and systems such as Music III expanded both theory and practical composition.

Modern Electronic Music and Sensory Experience

Today, electronic music is often classified by rhythmic structure. Four on-the-floor genres include techno and house, while broken rhythm genres include drum and bass and dubstep. In the twenty-first century, electronic music has expanded beyond sound into a multisensory art form. By combining visual and auditory elements, it creates synesthetic experiences and demonstrates the continuing convergence of technology and art.
